Everything avian

I watch them from shelter, this glass so wide, protects me from the virus seeping, through porous molecules, the cough in air, but the robins are there building a nest with twig and grass and grit they perceive how I listen to song, this melodic thrush brings everything avian into the haunting. Then comes amusementContinue reading “Everything avian”

Speaking of rivers

The power of a river breaking free from dam is an emblem washing over me with life detained, blue upon the seam snuffing out the black and brown and red so unseemly in not caring for life itself. Oh river can you hear me? Will you weep those tears for all I’ve seen? Or willContinue reading “Speaking of rivers”

The quarantine blues

The days of hope They came and went, and despair can breed the worry of closure on anything sweet – are those days gone for good? With blood in his mouth and bone through his teeth the heckler shouts tyrant in the kingdom of fear illusion reigns supreme with false grandeur. The love of aContinue reading “The quarantine blues”

My home town

The night drapes the sleeping, conceals our souls in smoke, when the dreams are open relentless in all breath- the gasp is what we search for and welcome smile relief, in my home town the people forever deal in grief. The forgotten soldier who served in world war he is now expendable to talking heads-theyContinue reading “My home town”

Pass-along plants

In my garden the compost delivers sweetness to tomatoes rich as cherry juice. The dark is a sign of riches that course through the vein of every vegetable, sparkling as liquid slips down the chin, hands all sticky- oh how sublime this eating is. There is beauty all around me from the chill of summerContinue reading “Pass-along plants”

Bubble life

The dying begins at birth. The acorn that spawns the mighty oak is but shadowed in the timeless space of the universe. The oak may extend life to caterpillars, bees, give shade to you and me but it will be felled someday whether the wilt or axe or long life- the method of death whetherContinue reading “Bubble life”

The lullaby blues

I will rock myself today in lullabies for babes like a newborn in my mother’s arms as she whispers from her grave, with an anthem from the angels you can never be alone – oh my lovely daughter sing on my dear, sing on. The rhythm of my feet despite their leftward beat will moveContinue reading “The lullaby blues”

Beautiful losers

There once was a dove who flew for centuries in groups with sound cacophonous. This most prolific of birds, numbering perhaps a billion, amazed those who watched them. These watchers recorded in words a chorus that will never be heard again. By 1890 these flocks had vanished. No slate blue males with copper undersides, hintsContinue reading “Beautiful losers”

Hubris

If you reach for the sun you will find a land of fire where everything is fuel every ego, every lie. Your wings will burn like Icarus- the diving is final. If you reach for the moon you will find a land breathless where nothing holds you down as you drift above the ground. WhenContinue reading “Hubris”
